Mother’s Milk: the perfect take-away

March 7th, 2006

I have to share this wonderful poster used over in Britain to promote breastfeeding. I got it when we were living in Wales, and was delighted to rediscover it again in a box of office supplies.

The poster has a charming picture of a smiling mom breastfeeding her baby. Next to the mom it reads ‘happy’ and next to the baby it reads ‘very happy’. Then on the bottom it reads ‘no fuss. no mixing. no heating. no refrigeration. no special equipment. right temperature. perfect nutrition. easy to digest. protects against tummy bugs, chest infections, asthma, eczema and allergies. no packaging. doesn’t cost a penny. mother’s milk: the perfect take-away

(Of course I type this while my daughter nurses to sleep in my lap)

Organic in your life

January 28th, 2006

The term ‘organic’ is often used in relation to food and textiles. It is generally understood to mean that the products are grown, harvested, and prepared without pestiides or harmful chemicals. But it is more than that. According to the National Organic Standards Board, organic agriculture is “based on … management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony.” They go on to say that “the primary goal of organic agriculture is to optimize the health and productivity of interdependent communities of soil life, plants, animals and people.”

The motto of Better for Babies from day one has been “Keep It Simple“. For us, the best way to maintain simplicity has been to wear our son and daughter in a sling. A sling keeps your baby close and happy. In short, it keeps things organic.

If you have not tried a baby sling, you will be amazed at how the sling brings your baby into your life and routine so completely and naturally. The benefits are astounding and numerous - you can read more about this on our ‘Benefits of Baby Wearing’ page.

Consider the Didymos organic baby sling. These are beautifully made ‘organic’ cotton wrapping cloths. In one sense, the term ‘organic’ means cotton grown according to strict guidelines such as no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers and manufactured without the use of chemicals or heavy metals. More fully it means that the agricultural practices “restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony.” But I like to think it adheres to the term ‘organic’ in the fullest sense as it restores, maintains and enhances harmony of the family unit. Once this is achieved it optimizes the health and productivity of the family as well!

I often get asked how I manage to run an internet business, take care of my kids and help my husband who has a neurodegenerative disease. Prayer helps, but I also owe a lot to my Didymos sling. So, now you know my secret! It keeps things organic! That, and like other WAHMs staying up really, really late. I have not yet mastered the art of rising really early to work as my kids have their special heat seeking auto sensors on in the morning.

With my Didymos in Wales, I would sometimes wear my son Gabriel for 6 hours a day. We did not have a car. So he often rode on my back when making runs to the post office, grocery, or [nostalgia break] going to the Uni library and walks along Swansea Bay. Oh, those were the days … *sigh*

Okay all you blog readers and emailers asking about the two product announcements, here is a hint on the first.

Tres Tria by Better for Babies

The Latin reference is to the number three, alluding to the ‘three in a bed’ concept.

Had Enough Polyester? Go Organic

January 12th, 2006

At the height of competition for Fuzzi Bunz pocket diaper sales over the last few months, free microterry inserts were the rage. One savvy retailer posted a search engine ad which read ‘Have enough inserts? Get a free gift instead.’ I laughed out loud because it was such a great ad. Then I could not help but think ‘Had enough polyester?’

Microterry is primarily polyester with nylon added for increased resiliency to wash and wear. There is no ‘organic’ or natural microterry. It is a synthetic man-made fabric. And though it may be modern marvel fabric, if you do not know already, polyester is a petroleum derived product. We offer you an alternative. Certified organic cotton avoids the pitfalls of conventional cotton production. It is pesticide free, gentle on the environment and even softer on your baby’s skin. Organic cotton velour even has a feel dry quality to it and matches the absorbency of hemp fabrics while still retaining a trim fabric for diapers.

A new baby, so innocent and pure, reminds us of the importance of natural and organic alternatives often invigorating the whole family to go organic in a variety of ways. In our family and shoppers at our online baby store, parents are making eco-conscious and organic choices from what they put against their baby’s skin to what she eats: organic cotton diapers, organic wool diaper covers, organic baby clothes, organic cotton baby slings, and organic nutrition.

Tune in for more on organic cotton diapers, wool covers, fair trade, co-sleeping, and more, including TWO big product announcements.
